About
About The Review Protocol — a Subthesis educational resource for evidence synthesis methodology.
Who runs this site
The Review Protocol is written and maintained by Angel Reyes as part of the Subthesis ecosystem. Subthesis builds practical tools for graduate students and researchers; this site is the methodology companion to those tools — a standalone, educational resource on how to design and conduct literature and systematic reviews.
Our mission
Evidence synthesis is a craft with established protocols — PRISMA 2020, the Cochrane Handbook, JBI methodology, and discipline-specific reporting standards. Those documents are rigorous but dense. Our mission is to teach evidence synthesis methodology in plain language, with step-by-step workflows, worked examples, and downloadable templates you can adapt to your project.
We cover the full arc of a review:
- Choosing the right review type (narrative, systematic, scoping, meta-analysis, rapid, integrative, umbrella)
- Developing a reproducible search strategy
- Screening and selection with PRISMA flow documentation
- Data extraction and coding
- Synthesis — narrative, thematic, framework, and meta-analytic
- Reporting and registration (PRISMA, PROSPERO)
A Subthesis Resource
The Review Protocol is A Subthesis Resource. Subthesis and this site share authorship and editorial direction. Where this site teaches methodology, Subthesis provides the interactive workspace — the Literature Matrix, Research Gap Finder, and Citation Network tool — so you can move from reading a guide to doing the work.
What this site covers
- Comprehensive review-type guides
- Process tutorials for every phase of a review
- Database search tutorials (PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and more)
- PRISMA resources and flow diagram templates
- Downloadable Excel, PDF, and Word templates (CC BY-NC)
- A methodology blog
What this site does NOT cover
- Interactive tools — matrix builders, gap finders, citation network graphs. Those live on Subthesis.com.
- Statistical consulting — for meta-analysis computation, we point to specialized resources.
- Institutional librarian services — your library's research librarian is the right partner for search strategy support on a specific project.
